This 12 year old boy has a lot of speech problems created by his Cerebral Palsy. In the last couple of years in our programme, he has started to be able to say single words. Our staff have now put together a personalised communication book for him, based on themes. He can point to the words and symbols he wants to use and the person talking with him can paraphrase it into a sentence.
So a couple of days ago, he was able to tell one of us, “I have a dog at home, it is black and white, skinny and ugly!”
This is him laughing at having been able to say that. The first time in his life he has ever been able to tell someone a whole sentence.
